What to Expect on the Day of Your Hair Transplant at My Hair UK in London
The day of a hair transplant is not something to fear, but something to prepare for. Most patients arrive a little nervous and leave with a real sense of relief, having completed the most important step in their hair restoration. Knowing what to expect helps reduce anxiety and supports a smoother recovery.
Arriving at the clinic
My Hair UK's London treatment takes place at its clinic at 158-160 Kenton Road, Harrow, HA3 8AZ, in north west London. The clinic is registered with the CQC and rated Good. You are greeted by the team, who already know your case, having met your named GMC-registered surgeon at your consultation. Your paperwork will have been reviewed beforehand, but your medical history, allergies and medicines are checked again on the day, along with a brief health check to confirm you are well enough for the procedure. This is standard for any planned minor surgery.
Photographs and marking
Before surgery begins, photographs are taken from several angles. They form part of your medical record and help you and your surgeon track your results over time. The treatment area is then marked with a surgical skin pen, including the area where grafts will be placed and the donor area, usually the back and sides of the scalp. You review and approve the planned hairline before any local anaesthetic is given.
Extraction
The procedure uses FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), which removes individual follicular units with a small punch. No stitches are needed, so there is no linear scar. Local anaesthetic is given in stages, starting with the donor area. Most patients describe the first injections as mildly uncomfortable, similar to a dental injection. Once the scalp is numb, you should not feel pain during extraction. The extracted grafts are kept in a holding solution designed to keep them healthy until they are placed.
Incisions and placement
Once the grafts are extracted, the surgeon makes the recipient incisions that set the angle, direction and density of the new hair. This is the most technically demanding part of the day, because each graft must sit at the right angle and depth to look natural. The surgical team then places each graft by hand. There are short breaks during the day for your comfort.
How long it takes and what it costs
The procedure takes most of the day, depending on the number of grafts. My Hair UK's prices are fixed and agreed in advance: £2,499 for up to 500 grafts, £2,899 for up to 1,000 grafts, £3,299 for up to 1,500 grafts, £3,699 for up to 2,000 grafts, and up to £4,899 for 3,500 grafts. Beard and eyebrow transplants are £2,899. The price includes all post-transplant medication and aftercare.
After surgery
Before you leave, the team goes through your aftercare instructions in person, including sleeping semi-upright for the first few nights and when to start washing your hair. You also have a dedicated patient portal with instructional videos from the surgeons. Most patients leave comfortably and can travel home by car or public transport, although it is best not to travel too far on the same day. Some patients stay nearby overnight, especially after a larger procedure. Others return to work within a few days if they are comfortable with the temporary redness and scabbing.
Follow-up and support
A hair transplant done properly is a day-case procedure with low complication rates. As with any surgery, there is a risk of folliculitis, swelling or graft loss, and these are explained in detail when you give consent. Progress is reviewed with monthly check-ins during recovery and free follow-up appointments with your surgeon at 6 and 12 months, and you can get in touch if anything concerns you along the way. |
