What to Expect on the Day of Your Hair Transplant at My Hair UK in London
As a doctor working at My Hair UK, I often tell patients that the day of their hair transplant is not something to fear, but something to prepare for. Most people arrive slightly nervous but leave the clinic with a clear sense of relief, having completed the most important part of their restoration journey. Knowing what to expect can help reduce anxiety, improve compliance, and support a smoother recovery.
When you arrive at our London clinic, the environment is calm and clinical. You’ll be greeted by the medical team who will already be familiar with your case. All documentation will have been reviewed beforehand, but we’ll double-check your medical history, allergies, and any medications you're taking. A brief health screening will be done to confirm that you are well enough for the procedure, which is standard protocol for any elective minor surgery.
Before the surgery begins, we’ll take pre-operative photographs from multiple angles under standardised lighting. These are part of your medical record and help both you and the surgeon track your results over time. We’ll also carefully mark the transplant area with a surgical skin pen—this includes the recipient area where grafts will be placed and the donor area (typically the back and sides of the scalp) from where follicles will be extracted. You will have the opportunity to review and approve the proposed hairline before any local anaesthesia is given.
The surgery itself is performed using the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method. This technique involves removing individual follicular units using a small punch tool—typically between 0.8 to 1.0 mm in diameter. No sutures are required, which means you won't have any linear scars. We use only manual or motor-assisted punches, which allow for precise control. The follicles are kept in a sterile holding solution at a temperature that preserves viability, often using hypothermosol or a similar isotonic solution, as supported in studies on graft survival rates (see: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32901698).
Local anaesthesia is administered in stages, beginning with the donor area. Patients often describe the initial injections as mildly uncomfortable, similar to a dental anaesthetic. Once the scalp is numb, you won’t feel any pain during graft extraction. Depending on your case, the extraction phase may take 1 to 2 hours. After this, we usually break for lunch, and meals are provided on site.
The implantation phase is more technically demanding. Each graft must be placed at the correct angle, depth, and density to achieve natural-looking results. We use forceps or implanter pens, depending on hair type and scalp condition. This phase can take several hours, and we typically schedule short breaks to ensure your comfort. Throughout the day, your vital signs will be monitored periodically, and you’ll be under continuous observation by our nursing staff.
Expect the full day to last between 6 to 8 hours depending on the number of grafts. At My Hair UK, prices are transparent and fixed: £2,899 for up to 1,000 grafts, £3,299 for 1,500 grafts, £3,699 for 2,000 grafts, and up to £4,899 for a 3,500-graft procedure. The cost reflects not just the surgical time but the expertise involved in designing and executing a result that will last for years.
After surgery, we’ll review your immediate aftercare instructions in person and provide you with a written guide. You’ll be shown how to sleep in a semi-upright position for the first few nights and advised on when to start washing your hair. We’ll supply a saline spray and other post-op materials before you leave the clinic. Most patients walk out comfortably and are fit to travel home by car or public transport.
Our London facility is centrally located, but we advise patients not to travel too far on the same day. Some patients choose to stay overnight in nearby accommodation, especially if they’ve had a large graft count. Others return to work within a few days if they’re comfortable with the temporary appearance of redness and scabbing.
Hair transplant surgery, when performed properly, is a day-case procedure with very low complication rates. Still, as with any surgery, there's a risk of folliculitis, swelling, or graft loss, which we explain in detail during consent. We offer 24/7 post-operative support for the first week to manage any unexpected issues. |
